The Friends of the Duncanville Public Library are pleased to announce that nationally renowned author Elmer Kelton will be their honoree at the 10th Anniversary Author Appreciation banquet to be held November 2.
“We are very excited to have Mr. Kelton as our guest. He’s nationally known, and is very popular with Duncanville readers,” said Bobbye Hill, President of the Friends. Leading to the author banquet, the Friends are launching ONE AUTHOR ONE COMMUNITY: DUNCANVILLE READS!
“We are focusing on the works of Elmer Kelton in our Read campaign, and we invite you to join us as we read and discuss different books by this author,” continued Mrs. Hill.
Since 1998, many communities have conducted One Book One Community Read programs, and Duncanville is expanding upon the idea by reading 5 books during 2006, with 4 by Elmer Kelton and 1 by Will James, and calling it One Author One Community. The purpose of the campaign is to cultivate a culture of reading and discussion by bringing the community together around a great author.
“We want everyone in Duncanville to read the same book at the same time, then come to the Library and discuss the book. And because of Mr. Kelton’s popularity, we plan to read more than one of his books over the course of the year, then topping off the discussions with our author banquet where you can meet the author,” she said.
By reading the same book, the Friends hope to foster continuity and unity in the community, where residents can relate to each other through shared experiences, knowledge, and events.
“You are the key to our campaign’s success,” said Mrs. Hill. “Join us at our next meeting on April 25th to discuss our first book, SMOKY THE COWHORSE by Will James.
Mr. Kelton says it’s the book that inspired him to become an author,” she continued. The Friends of the Library meet on the fourth Tuesday of every month in the Library’s Programming Room at 7pm.
